Makes costly mistake in draw

Muslera made two saves in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Cape Verde.

Analysis: Muslera had relatively little to do for periods of the match but was beaten by a phenomenal long-range set piece from Kevin Pina that gave Cape Verde its first-ever World Cup goal. Muslera was involved in the decisive equalizer in the second half, when a defensive breakdown and poor communication left him stranded off his line, allowing Helio Varela to capitalize on the mistake and score into an open net for Cape Verde's second goal. The error proved costly as Uruguay dropped two valuable points in Group H. Uruguay will be desperate for a result against powerhouse Spain in their final group stage match on Friday, June 26.

Gives up one goal in draw

Muslera had two saves and allowed one goal in Monday's 1-1 draw versus Saudi Arabia.

Analysis: Muslera was directly responsible for the sequence that led to the Saudi goal, as he gave up a rebound that allowed Abdulelah Al-Amri to score from close range. Muslera barely had to work in the second half, and he should have another quiet outing against Cape Verde on Sunday.

Competing for starting role

Muslera has been named in Uruguay's World Cup squad under coach Marcelo Bielsa, coming out of international retirement to compete with Sergio Rochet for the starting goalkeeper position heading into the tournament.

Analysis: Muslera delivered a solid season with Estudiantes in Argentina, providing the consistent and reliable performances that convinced coach Marcelo Bielsa to bring him back into the national team fold. The veteran goalkeeper's experience in major international tournaments, his composure under pressure and his ability to organize the defensive unit in front of him give him a genuine case to reclaim the starting role. His return from international retirement underlines the regard in which coach Marcelo Bielsa holds him, and his experience in World Cup football could prove the decisive factor in the coaching staff's selection decision heading into Uruguay's opening fixture.
